If two hermit crabs sees the same shell that they want to live in, or if a hermit crab sees a shell that is on another hermit crab, they will battle until one of them falls out of their shell.
When there is danger, the hermit crab tucks itself inside it's shell except for its pincers that protect the entrance of the shell from predators.
Sometimes the hermit crab will have sponges or sea-anenome on its back for camoflage.
They got there name from the men who went into caves inthe desert called hermits.
