The Atlantic bluefin tuna live mostly of of New England and around Stellwagen Bank.
It formed from an
iceberg during the ice age. It is a plateau of sand and gravel. It is surrounded
by cool deep water ranging from 65 to 600 feet deep. It is a national marine
sanctuary because so many organisms live there. Resting between Cape Anne and
Cape Cod it covers 842 square miles of ocean waters. There are rocky ledges with
cooler water. That is where the bluefin tuna likes to spend most of its time.
Though this is not the tuna's permanent home they are still important to this
habitat.
The bluefin tuna is important to its habitat because it is a consumer and part of the food
chain and if they weren't there mackerel, bluefish, and herring would become
more abundant. Become more abundant and there would be hungry killer whales and.
Not much sushi. But we are important to their habitat too.
