Create a simple class graph depicting the most common birds seen in your community, based on the bird inventories. Analyze your data. Which are here to stay? (Residents) Which ones are migratory?

Introduce Realize that there are millions of kinds of living things on earth right now. The number of species is not known; far less than half have even been named. Observe that living things can be classified into species on the basis of similarity in appearance and behavior. Examine specimens to note ways that individuals vary within a species.

Unit Home Assignment:

Each student creates a do-it-yourself binoculars to be used during the weeks activity in this unit. (Chickadee Chatter, p. 10 of Unit 1)

Unit Assessment Strategy:

Students will demonstrate sharpening their observation skills by choosing 2 birds seen during the unit, and describe (written, verbal, or by illustration) what was seen and heard. Each student will share the observation with another student who will try to guess the birds, based on the descriptions.
